512 Futsal Basic Rules

  • Team Composition:

    • Team sizes are 5 players on the field (including the goalkeeper) with max roster size of 10 players. Substitutions are generally unlimited and can occur during stoppages in play.

  • Game Duration:

    • Game duration is divided into two halves with a standard halftime break.

    • The length of the halves is 20 minutes each.

    • Running time is used in most cases, meaning the clock doesn't stop except for injuries or serious fouls.

    • Time outs are note applied in this league for event timing (possibly in championship matches but that is TBD)

  • Substitutions:

    • Substitutions are made on the fly and there is not limit to the number of subs made.

    • Substitutions are made from a designated area and players must be off the court before the substitue player may enter the playing court.

  • Ball Size:

    • Futsal-specific balls are used, which are smaller and have less bounce than regular soccer balls.

  • Playing Surface:

    • Futsal is played on a hard indoor court with lines designating the boundaries.

    • The court size can vary depending on age group but is smaller than a traditional soccer field.

  • Goal Size:

    • The goal size can vary by age group but is smaller than traditional soccer goals.

  • Goalkeeper:

    • The goalkeeper is the only player allowed to use their hands, but they can only do so within their penalty area.

    • The goalkeeper can only be played back to once per possession in his/her own half. The GK is free to join the attack and play with as many touches as they would like so long as it is all in the opposing teams half of the court.

  • Scoring:

    • Goals are scored when the entire ball crosses the goal line.

    • Scoring often involves a "no offside" rule, meaning players can't be called offside.

    • Goals occurring directly from kick-ins or kick-off do not count.

  • Fouls:

    • Common fouls include pushing, tripping, and handball violations.

    • A direct free kick is awarded for fouls, with the fouled player taking the kick from where the foul occurred.

    • Accumulated team fouls (five fouls) lead to an opposing team's penalty spot. In this situation the keeper has free range within penalty box to move and does not have to stay on their goal line.

    • Excessive fouls and/or hard tackles are subject to cautions. Players will be sent off for a 2 minute period and their team must play down a man for those two minutes or until the opposing teams scores a goal.

    • In-bound passes and restarts must be played within four seconds of the official signal to play from the referee.

    • Fouls committed inside the penalty area become penalties. Keepers must remain on their goalline until the goal is kicked.

  • No Slide Tackling:

    • Slide tackling is generally not allowed in youth futsal leagues to reduce the risk of injury.

  • Sportsmanship:

  • Good sportsmanship is encouraged, and rules often emphasize fair play and respect for opponents, coaches, and officials.

  • Referees and Officials:

  • Referees and officials enforce the rules and maintain order during games
